Summer Farming in Arizona: Managing Heat, Water, and Growth

Summer is one of the busiest and most rewarding seasons at L&B Farm. While many people picture long sunny days and growing gardens, farming through an Arizona summer takes planning, flexibility, and a lot of daily work behind the scenes.

Here in Willcox, Arizona, summer brings intense heat, dry conditions, monsoon storms, and rapid growth all at the same time. Every day requires us to pay close attention to the needs of our produce, flowers, and livestock to keep everything healthy and thriving through the season.

Managing Heat During Summer Farming in Arizona

Farming in Southern Arizona means learning how to work with the climate instead of against it. Summer temperatures can rise quickly, especially during the hottest parts of June and July. That heat impacts nearly every part of the farm, from watering schedules to harvest timing.

During the summer months, much of the work happens early in the morning before temperatures peak. Harvesting produce earlier in the day helps maintain freshness and quality while also reducing stress on plants.

Heat can also affect how quickly crops grow. Some vegetables thrive in warm weather, while others require extra attention to prevent sun damage or dehydration. Keeping a close eye on the garden throughout the season helps us adjust as conditions change.

Water Management on a Willcox Arizona Farm

Water management becomes especially important during Arizona summers. Efficient watering is one of the biggest parts of maintaining a productive garden in a dry climate.

Rather than simply watering more, summer farming often means watering smarter. Timing, consistency, and monitoring soil conditions all play a role in helping plants stay healthy during extreme heat.

At L&B Farm, we continue learning each season how to improve our growing practices and make the most of our environment. Every year brings different weather patterns, temperatures, and challenges, which means farming is always evolving.

Growth and Harvest Season on Our Southern Arizona Farm

Summer is also when the farm begins to fully come alive. Warm temperatures and longer days create strong growing conditions for many crops, and the garden changes quickly from week to week.

This season, we have continued expanding our produce garden while also adding a flower cutting garden to the farm. Watching new growth take shape each week has been one of the most exciting parts of the season.

Along with produce, summer is an important season for managing livestock as well. Making sure animals have access to shade, fresh water, and proper nutrition becomes especially important during periods of high heat.

Our Dorper and Katahdin sheep continue to be a great fit for our farm and climate. Their hardiness, calm nature, and adaptability make them well suited for raising livestock in Southern Arizona conditions.

Why Small Farm Practices Matter

One of the biggest advantages of small farming is the ability to stay hands on with the growing process. Small adjustments can be made quickly depending on weather, crop conditions, or seasonal changes.

Every harvest, every watering schedule, and every improvement comes from daily involvement and experience gained over time. Farming always comes with challenges, but it is rewarding to continue building something that provides fresh food and products for our community.

As summer continues, we are excited to keep growing, learning, and expanding what we offer here at L&B Farm.

Thank you for supporting local farming and following along with our journey.
